Food! Glorious Food!

I always thought that Indian cuisine topped the charts when it came to variety. But looks like Japanese food rules. I still have not tasted it but I certainly have seen most of it :)

Most restaurants here display their entire menu in glass cases outside.
This is to attract customers and whet appetites.

Its a common sight to see scores of hungry people drooling over the displays.

The Japanese have an amazing aesthetic sense and this extends to their food as well. Their food platter is a visual delight!

The food is so beautifully presented that it makes even a hardcore eggetarian like me think twice about my food preferences.

I have somehow managed to resist the urge to grab stuff from the showcase and gulum (eat) it :) And boy am I glad!

Cos instead of going "Ummmmmmmmmmmm" I would go "Haaaak Thuuuuu"!!
Yeah.. because I would be chewing some non biodegradable @#$% (read high quality plastic!).

Surpsrised! So was I when I figured out that the visual delight was actually gastronomical deceit :)
Some program on discovery enlightened me. Looks like the Japanese have perfected the art of making food replicas.

A restaurant wishing to have a model of one of its dishes first prepares that dish for the replica food company, which takes photographs and makes sketches of each item's placement on the plate. The sketches are then whisked to the factory where the actual food is dipped in silicon. When the silicon dries, the food is popped free, leaving exact-size molds for hamburger patties, deep-fried prawns, spring rolls or whatever the dish requires. Replica artists then prepare sauces and garnishes flawlessly matched with the photographs.

Cool huh? All this does not come cheap. Each piece of the silicon food can cost upto 90$, and an entire menu display a couple thousand dollars. Each of these displays can actually be considered a work or art.

So Dessert anyone ;)

These are real..I guess :)

If it was not for the plastic i would have yeppriciated the mad genius of this art.

Anyway Dee when we start our masala dosa combany there we will just open all doors and windows aitha and save on this extravagance. If the aroma can't bring them in nothing else can :D and the only way to synthesize that smell will be to cook it.Bega Japanese olfactory glands bagge research maadu.

Dee...tragedy kane ninge. che...u don't deserve this! You were better off stealing spoons and steel "lotas" from Benagalooru's local Shanti Sagars and their cousins! Atleast your booty had some utilitarian value and re-sale value! (ooops!! Did i say something that I shouldn't have said!!)But what do u do with silcon moulded non-vegetarian food?? And I just hope the side effects of tasting God knows what chemical, were mild and bearable!

It does not stop with food. I read somewhere that Jap houses are the best houses in the world. They may be small, but everything in the house has a place and an order. eg. The photo hangs in a particular place simply because it looks good there and no where else. The biggest challenge for Dee would be setting up a house the Japanese style. Believe me!! they are toooo good at that.

Wow those plastic replicas really look real ! Darshini's in B'lore have pictures of the food on their display menu, but these japanese are much ahead. Very interesting.

I am sorry you lost your camera. Tell me more about the new one you got. How much did it cost?

It is early morning here in India and this post made me hungry for some del.icio.us food (though I am on dieting).

Btw I came from http://inferno.aimk.org/bloghunt/about4118.html (The blog hunt for business school blogs). Enjoy
